What is branding? More than a logo or visual identity
Branding is about how people recognise and remember your organisation. A logo and visual identity give it a visible form, but they are not the whole story. The words you use and the way your communication fits together also shape the impression you leave.
Branding, brand identity, logo and visual identity: what’s the difference?
The terms branding and brand identity are often used interchangeably. Your brand identity describes what your organisation stands for and how it wants to be perceived. Branding brings that story to life through the choices you make in your communication.
A logo is one recognisable point of reference. A visual identity defines how colours, typography, imagery and graphic elements are used together. Those visual elements gain more meaning when your copy and other communication materials follow the same direction.
Why consistency and recognition matter
People encounter your brand in different places: on your website, in a brochure, on social media or through signage. If each one feels different, it becomes harder to recognise your organisation. A clear brand foundation helps you make choices without starting from scratch every time.
This is not only relevant to organisations that are just getting started. An established brand may also expand to new audiences, services or channels. In that case, it pays to assess what still works and which elements need a focused refresh. Not every change requires a completely new brand.
From brand story to everyday use
Before commissioning a logo or refreshing a visual identity, it helps to clarify who you want to reach, what people should remember and what your current communication already does well. Those questions guide both the design and the words you use.
Your brand also needs to work across the materials you use every day. Think of presentations, publications, websites or social media formats. Clear guidelines and usable files help your team apply the chosen direction consistently.
How Crossmark can help
Crossmark can develop a new brand identity, refresh an existing visual identity or translate a concept created by another partner into practical applications. The disciplines we bring in depend on your needs. Read more about this service on our Branding & identity page.
Our cases show how different these projects can be. For De Nekker, a question about signage grew into a new visual identity. For COGIVA, we built on a visual direction created by an external agency.
